In 2021, Florida Bulldog covered the shocking schism at Fort Lauderdale First Baptist Church and its implications for downtown development; out-of-control development in Miami and Coral Gables, where one homeowner has watched as his home was literally swallowed by a $500 million office/hotel/condo project; puzzling decisions by the Florida ethics commission and the director of Miami-Dade’s ethics commission; Big Sugar’s quiet expansion north of Lake Okeechobee; strife between animal advocates and Broward’s Animal Control Division and the ongoing courtroom war between Davie businessman Ron Bergeron and Waste Management.
Here are a some other stories that Florida Bulldog dug out and reported this year:
• Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony is under investigation by the FBI for suspected bid rigging, and that more than a half dozen municipalities unhappy with the sheriff’s contracted police/fire protection are considering not renewing.
• COVID-19. Multiple stories regarding questionable multi-million dollar, no-bid contracts handed out by Gov. Ron DeSantis. For example, Plantation’s MedPro, accused in court of profiting from the “forced labor” of foreign workers, got a $103.4 million staffing contract. On May 5, MedPro’s parent contributed $10,000 to DeSantis’s campaign. Other stories examined DeSantis’s decision to let Publix handle the early distribution of vaccines to seniors and Publix’s campaign donations to DeSantis; another looked at the pandemic’s impact on the homeless in Miami.
• 9/11. President Biden’s September order that the FBI declassify and make public documents related in Operation Encore, the bureau’s once-secret probe of Saudi complicity in 9/11 that Florida Bulldog exclusively uncovered in 2016, made national headlines. But even before those FBI documents began to flow, the enormous lawsuit between the 9/11 Families and Saudi Arabia making news that the mainstream media has ignored, including the court’s hunt for the leaker of a classified deposition and the leaker’s dramatic admission as to why he did it.
