In December 2015, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office cut a secret antitrust deal with Waste Management that allowed it to complete its big money acquisition of Southern Waste Systems and Sun Recycling, including Sun’s Broward recycling facilities. In the six years before, as Bondi campaigned for election and re-election, Waste Management contributed more than $150,000 to the Republican Party of Florida, Gov. Rick Scott and Bondi. -

For 14 years, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has paid Miami’s Armor Correctional Health Services hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to provide healthcare services for Broward‘s jail inmates. The money flowed despite accusations of substandard care, indifference, political intrigue, malpractice and at least 15 needless deaths since 2010. Today, BSO is again soliciting bids for a new multi-year contract and Armor wants the job. -

Two years ago, Plaza Health Network agreed to pay the U.S. Department of Justice $17 million to settle a civil investigation that revealed the Aventura-based nursing home chain operated an illegal kickback scheme involving Medicare and Medicaid patient referrals. Now, Plaza Health is looking to recoup the money by suing its former general counsel and the prominent law firm he was a partner in for malpractice. -
