Justice hard to find for South Florida investment victims, but swindler will be home for holidays

There is no justice for Marion Green and others victimized by stock broker and swindler Gary J. Gross. He fleeced dozens of his clients from across South Florida, many he worshiped with at a Boca Raton synagogue. Their total losses were as much as $20 million. Federal arbitrators ruled Gross should pay three-dozen of his victims $7.5 million. Other big awards were imposed, too, but so far no one has seen a dime. -

Hallandale to vote on $1.2 million Deutsch land deal; purchase would quell charter school foes

A charter school company run by ex-Congressman Peter Deutsch stands to make a $700,000 profit if Hallandale Beach commissioners accept a staff recommendation Wednesday to buy a 1.9 acre residential site where it once planned to build a controversial 450-student, K-8 school. -
Broward cuts $107 million trash deal; calls start to disband Resource Recovery Board

Saying it had gotten the best deal it could, Broward’s Resource Recovery Board six months ago urged the county to approve its controversial 10-year, $1.5 billion no-bid trash disposal agreement with giant Waste Management. But Broward County commissioners balked, asking staff instead to negotiate a better deal. -
Plans for the Ireland’s Inn site on Fort Lauderdale beach bog down despite city’s big giveaway

In July, 2008, as the economy was tanking, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission gave away a block of North Ocean Boulevard to the owners of the former Ireland’s Inn. The idea was to promote development of a towering, tax-generating five-star beachfront resort known as Fairwinds. Nearly three years out, with the economy heading south again, Fairwinds continues to exist only on paper. -

Water District’s watered-down rules let ex-chairman-turned-lobbyist dodge conflict law

When it comes to lobbying, the rules are different at the South Florida Water Management District. A loophole written into the Water District rules has opened a revolving door of influence that at least one former governing board member-turned-lobbyist has used to sidestep state conflict of interest rules.
