Just about every South Florida MAGA Republican, including President Donald Trump, has endorsed former Miami City Manager Emilio Gonzalez to be the city’s next mayor. Recently, two of Miami’s Cuban-American congressional members, Maria Elvira Salazar and Mario Diaz-Balart, joined the Gonzalez bandwagon ahead of the December 9 run-off. But their fellow Cuban- American colleague and staunch Trump regime defender, U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, has avoided making an endorsement. -

The Miami fight over right to sue to block controversial development

A proposed amendment to Miami’s charter that would help a series of lawsuits aimed at stopping controversial mega-projects on public waterfront land has drawn fierce opposition from City Attorney Victoria Mendez. Amendment supporters, on the other hand, accuse Mendez of running interference because she fears the lawsuits — if allowed to move forward — would expose her office’s role in violating the city charter, breaking Florida’s public records law and feeding misinformation to city commissioners. -

Carvalho’s contract “contrary to law” but Miami-Dade schools boss won’t fix it

Nine months ago, a state audit concluded that Miami Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s generous severance package violated state law. Despite the finding, Carvalho has refused to amend his employment agreement to fix one of the problems identified in the audit, claiming he doesn’t have to do so. -

Miami-Dade commissioners find $30 million to fix iconic courthouse

Last year, local judges and prominent attorneys led an unsuccessful campaign to convince Miami-Dade voters to foot the bill for a new $368 million civil court building, plus $25 million to fix up the iconic Dade County Courthouse. The measure failed 2-to-1. Now it turns out Miami-Dade County already had a pot of taxpayer money available for extensive repairs needed at the deteriorating, 87-year-old landmark.
